Convergence Study of PWM Control of ABR Traffic in ATM

چکیده
In recent years a considerable amount of research [1-14] has been undertaken in the area of congestion control and avoidance of available bit rate(ABR) service. Both the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) and the ATM Forum have accepted the rate based feedback scheme as the framework for ABR traffic control [1, 6, 8 & 15]. In the ABR traffic management scenario, each source attempts to adjust its admission rate to control the buffer levels of the switches along its virtual channel (VC) from the source to the destination in congestion control and to prevent buffer overflow in the case of congestion avoidance. The ABR service model supports the virtual source (VS) and virtual destination (VD) concept where the network elements can segment the ABR control loop into many small control loops. There can be any number of VS/VD loops along the path of a VC from the source end system (SES) to the destination end system (DES) [8 & 15]. If the network is segmented so that there is a single link between each VS and VD pair, this is known as hop by hop (HBH) control. Methods used for closed-loop Rate based ABR traffic management can be divided into two categories depending on the quantity being controlled. In the first category, the queue level is measured and the source rate is calculated using this information and a target or a threshold queue level. The switch sends this rate indication to the source using a resource management (RM) cell. The intermediate switches can reduce the indicated rate according to their source rate values. The switch can also send the queue level written directly into an RM cell back to the upstream switch. In the second category, the switches calculate the explicit rate for the sources using currently available throughput information. This rate is sent to the upstream switch using RM cells. Intermediate switches may reduce this rate according to their rate calculations. It is also possible to write the throughput value into an RM cell by the VD switch. The VS calculates the admission rate using the throughput information available in the RM cell. In this paper, we use this

On the Convergence of a Direct Adaptive Controller for ATM ABR Congestion Control
One of the more challenging and yet unresolved issues which is paramount to the success of ATM networks is that of congestion control for Available Bit Rate (ABR) traffic. Unlike other ATM service categories, ABR provides a feedback mechanism, allowing interior nodes to dictate source rates. Previous work has demonstrated how linear adaptive control theory can be utilized to create a stable a...
متن کاملPredictive Fuzzy Logic Control of ABR Traffic in ATM Networks
In this paper, we propose an efficient and stable algorithm employing fuzzy logic for available bit rate (ABR) traffic. Large time-delay incurred in the feedback path and the statistical variation in the link capacity at the ATM node can cause instability or unfairness. The stability and fairness issues are discussed and the performance of the proposed mechanism is evaluated. key words: ABR, AT...
متن کاملBuffer and Throughput Analysis of the Explicit Rate Congestion Control Mechanism for ABR services in ATM networks
In this paper we consider ABR traffic which shares an output port of a switch with delay sensitive CBR/VBR traffic. Congestion control of the ABR traflic is achieved by mean? of an Explicit Rate control scheme. Two important performance measurea are evaluated using an analytical model : the ABR-buffer occupancy distribution in the switch and the ABR traffic throughput. We consider two types of ...
متن کاملA Hybrid Medium Access Control for Convergence of Broadband Wireless and Wireline ATM Networks
In this paper, we propose a hybrid medium access control protocol for supporting broadband integrated services in the wireless ATM networks. The integrated services include CBR, VBR and ABR traffic varying from low bit-rate to very high bit-rate. The proposed protocol is an excellent compromise of contention, reservation and polling access techniques based on the dynamic TDMA system. Extensive ...
متن کاملPerformance of TCP/IP over ATM over an ADSL
The performance of TCP/IP over ATM over an asymmetric digital subscriber line (ADSL) was investigated. Because the bandwidth of an ADSL link can vary over time due to changes in the link’s physical conditions, which degrades TCP performance, we performed simulations for various ATM traffic controls, including available bit rate (ABR) and generic flow control, used to handle variations in the AD...
